John McCain 2008 Launches New Web Ad: "Character Forged By Family"

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today released a new web ad. The ad, entitled "Character Forged by Family," focuses on John McCain's family history of service to our nation and the central role the family plays in the formation of our individual character and the character of American society.

"Character Forged by Family" is scheduled to appear on national news and information websites.

Script For "Character Forged by Family" (1:24-Web)

ANNCR: The son and grandson of admirals.

His grandfather an aviator, his father a submariner.

They were his first heroes, and earning their respect has been one of the lasting ambitions of his life.

They gave their lives to their country and taught young John McCain lessons about honor, courage, duty, perseverance and leadership.

Lessons he didn't fully grasp until later in his life when confronted with challenges he never imagined.

The family he was born into, and the family he is blessed with now, made John McCain the man he is, and instilled in him a deep and abiding respect for the social institution that wields the greatest influence in the formation of our individual character and the character of our society.

Among the most important things children can inherit from their parents is a sense of purpose, and an aspiration to be part of something greater than their self interest.

And that is the honor we earn and the love we give when we work and sacrifice with others for a cause greater than our self-interest.

For John Sidney McCain, that cause has been our country.

Heritage Foundation Senior Policy Analyst Rea Hederman On Sen. John McCain's (R-AZ) Economic Policies

In Case You Missed It

Heritage Foundation Senior Policy Analyst Rea Hederman On Sen. John McCain's (R-AZ) Economic Policies

Hederman: "I think John McCain has probably the most clear vision of kind of what went wrong. We know that the housing market was engaged in a bubble. So John McCain doesn't want to enact any policies that tries to prop up the bubble, that puts taxpayers on the hook for either risky lenders or risky borrowers." (CNBC's "The Call," 3/27/08)

Hederman: "John McCain is also saying, look, if you're going to come to the Federal Reserve, use the new discount window, then yes you should be regulated. I think there is bipartisan agreement that there was some regulation breakdown. But let's look at the specific problems. People that weren't regulated correctly. We can fix the system that we have now instead of sitting there and trying to bring everybody into a new regulation system that will only increase costs down the road." (CNBC's "The Call," 3/27/08)

David Brooks New York Times On John McCain

By David Brooks, New York Times
March 28, 2008

Barack Obama says: "John McCain is determined to carry out four more years of George Bush's failed policies." Obama is a politician, so it's normal that he'd choose to repeat the lines that some of his followers want to hear. But before people buy that argument, I'd ask them to read three speeches.

The first was delivered by McCain on Sept. 28, 1983. The Reagan administration was seeking Congressional authorization to support the deployment of U.S. Marines in Lebanon. McCain, a freshman legislator, decided to oppose his president and party.

McCain argued that Lebanese society, as it existed then, could not be stabilized and unified by American troops. He made a series of concrete observations about the facts on the ground. Lebanon was in a state of de facto partition. The Lebanese Army would not soon be strong enough to drive out the Syrians. The American presence would not intimidate the Syrians into negotiating.

"I do not foresee obtainable objectives in Lebanon." He concluded. "I believe the longer we stay, the more difficult it will be to leave, and I am prepared to accept the consequences of our withdrawal."

This was not the speech of a man who thinks military force is the answer to every problem. It was the speech of one who conforms policies to facts. And it came a month before a terrorist attack that killed 241 Americans.

The second speech was delivered on Nov. 5, 2003. This was not a grand strategy speech. It was a critique of the execution of existing U.S. policy.

First, McCain wondered about the Pentagon's publicity campaign in Iraq: "When, in the course of days, we increase by thousands our estimate of the numbers of Iraqis trained, it sounds like somebody is cooking the books."

He then pointed out that the U.S. had not committed sufficient troops. He called for a counterinsurgency strategy in which U.S. forces would actually hold secure territory. "Simply put," he said, "there does not appear to be a strategy behind our current force levels in Iraq, other than to preserve the illusion that we have sufficient forces in place to meet our objectives."

He excoriated the arrogance of Paul Bremer and the Coalition Provisional Authority: "The C.P.A. seems to think that all wisdom is made in America, and that the Iraqi people were defeated, not liberated."

This was the speech of a man, adjusting to changing circumstances, who was calling on the administration to adjust quickly as well.

The third McCain speech was delivered on Wednesday. It is as personal, nuanced and ambitious a speech as any made by a presidential candidate this year.

McCain noted that we are not only fighting a war on terror. The world is seeing a growing split between liberal democracies and growing autocracies. We are seeing a world in which great power rivalries - with China, Russia and Iran - have to be managed and soothed.

Moreover, the U.S. is not the sole hegemon. Power is widely distributed among many rising nations. McCain's core purpose in the speech was to revive the foreign policy tradition that has jumped parties but that has been associated with people like Theodore Roosevelt, Henry Stimson, Dean Acheson, John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan.

In this tradition, a strong America is the key to world peace, but America's role is as a leading player in an international system. America didn't defeat communism, McCain said Wednesday, the American-led global community did. This is the tradition that Robert Kagan of the Carnegie Endowment has been describing for a decade.

McCain offered to build new pillars for that system - a League of Democracies, a new nuclear nonproliferation regime and a successor to the Kyoto treaty. In stabilizing Asia and the Middle East, he would rely more on democracies like Turkey, India, Israel and Iraq, and less on Mubarak and Musharraf.

Unlike the realists, McCain believes other nations have to be judged according to how they treat their own citizens. Unlike the Bush administration in its first few years, he believes global treaties cannot solely be evaluated according to a narrow definition of the American interest. The U.S. also has to protect the fabric of the international system.

McCain opened his speech with a description of his father leaving home on the day of Pearl Harbor, and then being gone for much of the next four years. He harkened back repeatedly to the accomplishments of the Truman administration.

In so doing, he signaled that the foreign policy debate of the coming months will be very different from the one of the past six years. Anybody who thinks McCain is merely continuing the Bush agenda is not paying attention.

OBAMA'S HIGH TAX PLATFORM AND RECORD WOULD HURT THE ECONOMY
Obama Has Proposed A Laundry List Of Tax Hikes On The Campaign Trail, Which Would Hurt The Economy:
Obama Has Called For Higher Income Taxes, Social Security Taxes, Investment Taxes, And Corporate Taxes, As Well As "Massive New Domestic Spending.""Obama's transformation, if you go by his campaign so far, would mean higher income taxes, higher Social Security taxes, higher investment taxes, higher corporate taxes, massive new domestic spending, and a healthcare plan that perhaps could be the next step to a full-scale, single-payer system. Is that what most Americans want, someone who will fulfill a Democratic policy wish list?" (James Pethokoukis, "Barack Hussein Reagan? Ronald Wilson Obama?" Obama: "We could be fighting to put the American dream within reach for every American - by giving tax breaks to working families ..." (Sen. Barack Obama, Remarks On Iraq And The Economy, Charleston, WV, 3/20/08)
Obama Voted In Favor Of The Democrats' FY 2009 Budget. "Adoption of the concurrent resolution that would set broad spending and revenue targets over the next five years. The resolution would allow up to $1 trillion in discretionary spending for 2009." (S. Con. Res. 70, CQ Vote #85: Adopted 51-44: R 2-43; D 47-1; I 2-0, 3/14/08, Obama Voted Yea)
  • The Democrats' Budget Would Raise Taxes On Individuals Earning As Little As $31,850. "Under both Democratic plans, tax rates would increase by 3 percentage points for each of the 25 percent, 28 percent and 33 percent brackets. At present, the 25 percent bracket begins at $31,850 for individuals and $63,700 for married couples. The 35 percent bracket on incomes over $349,700 would jump to 39.6 percent." OBAMA HAS A LIBERAL SPENDING AGENDA; CONTRADICTS CLAIM HE'S FISCALLY CONSERVATIVE
Obama's Liberal Spending "Suggests A Lack Of Seriousness In Confronting The Nation's Fiscal Condition":
"Hillary Clinton And Barack Obama Champion Fiscal Responsibility On The Campaign Trail, But Both Democratic Presidential Hopefuls Are Promising Massive New Spending Without Providing Details On How They'd Pay For It." (Kevin G. Hall and Margaret Talev, "Clinton, Obama Ignore Budget Crisis, Promise Billions," McClatchy Newspapers, 2/22/08)
USA Today: "[C]linton and Obama both offer a long list of new spending proposals that suggests a lack of seriousness in confronting the nation's fiscal condition. Obama has received more criticism, perhaps deservedly so, because his list is somewhat longer."(Editorial, "Democrats Promise A Lot, But Who Will Pay The Bill?" USA Today, 2/25/08)

Hall and Margaret Talev, "Clinton, Obama Ignore Budget Crisis, Promise Billions," McClatchy Newspapers, 2/22/08)
NOTE: Obama Claims He's Fiscally Conservative. Obama: "I am a progressive, but I always tell people that if you're a progressive you should be fiscally even more conservative than the so-called conservatives. ... The reason is, there are a lot of needs where we need to spend money, so we can't afford to waste money on stuff that we don't need." (April Castro, "Obama Touts Conservative Spending Approach," The Associated Press, 2/28/08)
OBAMA PROPOSED AN INADEQUATE HOUSING PLAN

Obama Supports Creating A Mortgage "Bailout Fund." "[S]en. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), who is vying with Clinton for their party's presidential nomination, advocated fining unscrupulous lenders to partially pay for a bailout fund for distressed borrowers." (Jessica Holzer, "Major Bailout Is Unlikely On Sub-Prime Mortgages," The Hill, 9/4/07)
  • "Opponents Argue That Bailouts Send The Wrong Message To Recipients And Do Nothing To Discourage Future Irresponsible Behavior." (Robert Schroeder, "Should Washington Come To Aid Of Troubled Borrowers?" Dow Jones' MarketWatch, 8/31/07)

(Stephen Braun, Nicholas Riccardi and Maria La Ganga, "Rivals Differ On Foreclosure Cure," Los Angeles Times, 2/21/08)
Obama Said Fining Lenders Would Only "Partially" Cover The Cost Of His $10 Billion Bailout Fund - So Do Taxpayers Have To Pay The Rest?

Obama: "We can partially pay for this fund by imposing penalties on lenders that acted irresponsibly or committed fraud." (Sen. Barack Obama, Op-Ed, "Fine Unscrupulous Mortgage Lenders," Financial Times [London, UK], 8/29/07)

Both Clinton's And Obama's Mortgage Proposals Would Place "Some Added Burden On Taxpayers." "On the housing front, both candidates have put forward proposals that would put at least some added burden on taxpayers." (Nick Timiraos, "Candidates Differ On Housing," The Wall Street Journal, 2/20/08)
OBAMA BACKS INCREASED GOVERNMENT ROLE IN THE ECONOMY
Obama Wants Larger Government Role In Free Market Economy:
Obama Said "We've Depended On Government Action To ... Make The Market Work Better." Obama: "[W]e have a tendency to take our free-market system as a given, to assume that it flows naturally from the laws of supply and demand and Adam Smith's invisible hand. ... And although the benefits of our free-market system have mostly derived from the individual efforts of generations of men and women pursuing their own vision of happiness, in each and every period of great economic upheaval and transition we've depended on government action to open up opportunity, encourage competition, and make the market work better." (Barack Obama, The Audacity Of Hope, 2006, p. 150)
  • Obama: "But our history should give us confidence that we don't have to choose between an oppressive, government-run economy and a chaotic and unforgiving capitalism. ... What might such a new economic consensus look like? ... [W]e can begin to modernize and rebuild the social contract that FDR first stitched together in the middle of the last century." (Barack Obama, The Audacity Of Hope, 2006, pp. 158-159)
OBAMA'S POOR TAX, SPENDING AND BUSINESS INTEREST GROUP RATINGS
Obama Received A "Perfect Liberal Score" On Economic Issues From The National Journal:

Take A Ride On The Straight Talk Express!!

My Friends,

Next week, I will embark on a "Service to America" tour visiting numerous locations that have played a significant role in shaping who I am today; places where I have had the honor of serving our nation. This tour will take me through Mississippi, Virginia, Florida and my home state of Arizona. I look forward to visiting sites that have left an imprint on my life aboard my campaign bus, the Straight Talk Express.

My campaign has come up with an opportunity for a supporter to join me on the Straight Talk Express for a day of conversation and campaigning. As a token of my appreciation for your financial support, you will be entered to win this seat aboard the Straight Talk Express if you make a contribution before midnight on March 31st. I hope you'll consider joining me by making a donation today. If you can give $50 or more, not only will you be entered to win a ride on the Straight Talk Express, but you'll receive a commemorative Straight Talk Express ticket.

March 31, 2008 marks an important deadline for our campaign. We will file a report with the FEC outlining the amount of money we have raised during the past three months. I'm reaching out to you to ask for your support by following this link to make a donation of $50, $100, $250, $500, $1,000 - anything you can contribute up to the legal limit of $2,300.

I have said many times before that this campaign will be the most expensive campaign in our history, and I have no doubt that both Senators Clinton and Obama will continue to report historic, record-breaking fundraising numbers.  With your support today, my campaign will have the resources necessary to compete with either Senator Clinton or Obama in what will be a great contest come November.

I'm looking forward to traveling on the Straight Talk Express again next week, visiting directly with voters, hearing their concerns, offering my vision for the future and highlighting those among us who are serving our country and communities, dedicating themselves to causes greater than their own self interest. Your support makes this possible, and I am grateful for any assistance you are able to give.

Sincerely,

John McCain

P.S. You have an opportunity to join me aboard the Straight Talk Express by making a generous contribution before March 31st. With your donation of $50 or more, we will send you an exclusive, commemorative Straight Talk Express ticket as a symbol of your commitment to our campaign. Thank you.

John McCain For Whom The Bell Tolls

John McCain. For Whom The Bell Tolls.

John McCain’s favorite book is For Whom the Bell Tolls a novel by Ernest Hemingway (1940).
This fact is often fodder for lil’ human interest stories or tossed about the net-world as a bit of trivia. In general it is largely dismissed, disregarded and or simply over-looked.

Personally, I think there is a lot more to it. I feel there are distinct reasons this is McCain’s favorite novel.

Now if you have not read Hemingway’s For Whom The Bell Tolls, you really should. It is after-all a fantastic novel (transliteration aside). If you haven’t read Hemingway at all then please just turn your computer off right now.

The novel is written in a manner that we are involved in the story via the thoughts of one Robert Jordan. Robert (an American and demolitions expert) is in the International Brigades (a Loyalist) attached to an anti-fascist guerilla unit in the mountains during the Spanish Civil War, fighting the forces of the Nationalist Generalísimo Francisco Franco. In short Robert is there to blow up a bridge. Sound unfamiliar? Read the book.

One could state the novel illustrates two ideologies falling away in the face of death. People still have their own take on the predominant theme and so on. That matters not, anyone that reads the novel ‘gets it’. Take the imagery of the horse and the plane. (That alone relates to McCain) Hemingway was great at imagery and great at including his primary themes into the minutest of circumstances.

Robert’s code: "the bridge can be the point on which the future of the human race can turn" More likely than not many of you have already picked up on why I utilized that excerpt. The need for a republican soldier to believe in the cause he is fighting in and believe that the cause he both kills for and accepts his own death for will benefit his countrymen. The blunt knowledge that every action man makes will have consequences great and small. John McCain’s mantra (and subsequently that of the troops that uttered it to him) “Let Us Win!”I think you can figure out the rest.

Of course one of the main things the characters, and the reader, deals with in this novel is death. Nearly every character in the novel, at least those you become familiar with, at one point or another contemplate their own death . . . mortality. Another strong message we gather throughout the course of the novel is that of ‘brother-hood or camaraderie’.

“Glory is not a conceit. It is not a decoration for valor. Glory belongs to the act of being constant to something greater than yourself, to a cause, to your principles, to the people on whom you rely and who rely on you in rerun.” John McCain.

I don’t know about you, I am quite certain if there is a man on earth that can relate to those two intense themes and nearly in an identical fashion it is John S. McCain III.

Robert is a good soldier, a ‘hero’ if you will. He deals with the ideas of death in many ways throughout the novel. He faces not only his own death but that of friends, allies etc.
At one point when Robert is convinced that is capture and subsequent horrid torture are inevitable the thought of suicide runs through his mind, he thinks: "you have to be awfully occupied with yourself to do a thing like that" Indeed. I have read Faith Of My Fathers by John McCain and Mark Salter. I have watched many a documentary, video, interview etc. as well as talked with McCain personally. There is no doubt John McCain both dealt with and overcame many of these same circumstances.

“Our armed forces will fight for peace in Iraq, a peace built on more secure foundations than are found today in the Middle East. Even more important, they will fight for two human conditions of even greater value than peace: liberty and justice.” John McCain.

Of course a strong theme in the novel is politics, ideology and religion. Fascism tends (for obvious reasons) to be the main focus. During a conversation regarding fascism in America Robert makes an interesting statement (Robert has just been asked if he will have to fight in his country as they do here against fascists, and whether or not there are many fascists in America): “'There are many who do not know they are fascists but will find it out when the time comes.”

After two members of the anti-war group Code Pink interrupted McCain's speech to the National Rifle Association, the Arizona Republican said, "Well, my friends, we beat you yesterday. We beat you the day before. We'll beat you today and we'll beat you tomorrow. We won't choose to lose. We won't choose to lose this conflict."

“War is wretched beyond description, and only a fool or a fraud could sentimentalize its cruel reality. The core political values of our free society are so deeply embedded in our collective consciousness that only a few malcontents, lunatics generally, ever dare to threaten them. We must win in Iraq. If we withdraw, there will be chaos; there will be genocide; and they will follow us home.” John McCain.

John McCain read For Whom The Bell Tolls. I am guessing several times over. John McCain lives the novel every day of his life. If we give in to these liberal ideals there will be chaos. There will be great loss not only abroad but here at home.

Read some Hemingway. Listen to McCain. Vote in November. Let us win. Let us win my friends let us win.

Marcus Aurelius (Emperor 161-180) Speaks To Us About John McCain

Marcus Aurelius (Emperor 161-180) Speaks To Us About John McCain

This evening someone called me to assist them with a paper they had to write regarding certain literature from the time period 120-180. I am not going to bore you with all of the details except to say that Marcus was not the focus of this however, when I began my long drawn out over-detailed answer this suddenly popped into my head. Immediately after ending the conversation I had to go and dig through some old books to find the exact one and re-read it.

This is from Book I of Meditations. I typically refer to it as Pros Heauton Book I as I feel it is a more accurate description. Pros Heauton was after all both the intended title and meaning. ("To Himself" is what most with any intellect believe Marcus intended) In all reality Marcus is speaking about Antoninus Pius, his adoptive father who reigned from 138-161. It is, according to Marcus, his depiction of an Ideal ruler and the type he wanted to live up to.

I have taken the liberty of utilizing a somewhat difficult to find (easier now with the internet and all) 1964 translation by Maxwell Staniforth. More likely than not the best effort in putting the Meditation book together and with translation was and is A.S.L Farquharson's published in 1944. We don't have time for that LOL. There are plenty of others out there you may be more familiar with . . . one in particular(sorry George Long doesn't work for me). I don’t like them. So this is what you get. Now on with it . . .

The qualities I admired in my father were his lenience, his firm refusal to be diverted from any decision he had deliberately reached, his complete indifference to meretricious honors, his industry, his perseverance, and willingness to listen to any project for the common good; the unvarying insistence that rewards must depend on merit; the expert’s sense of when to tighten the reins and when to relax them; and the efforts he made to suppress pederasty.

He was aware that social life must have its claims: his friends were under no obligation to join him at his table or attend his progresses, and when they were detained by other engagements it made no difference to him. Every question that came before him in council was painstakingly and patiently examined; he was never content to dismiss it on a cursory first impression. His friendships were enduring; they were not capricious, and they were not extravagant. He was always equal to an occasion; cheerful, yet long-sighted enough to have all his dispositions unobtrusively perfected down to the last detail. He had an ever-watchful eye to the needs of the Empire, prudently conserving its resources and putting up with the criticisms that resulted. Before his gods he was not superstitious; before his fellow-men he never stooped to bid for popularity or woo the masses, but pursued his own calm and steady way, disdaining anything that savoured of the flashy or new-fangled. He accepted without either complacency or compunction such material comforts as fortune had put at his disposal; when they were to hand he would avail himself of them frankly, but when they were not he had no regrets.

(You are reading this right? John McCain John McCain John McCain. It is near impossible to think of anyone else at this time when reading this)

Not a vestige of the casuist’s quibbling, the lackey’s pertness, the pedant’s over-scrupulosity could be charged against him; all men recognized him a mature and finished personality, that was impervious to flattery and entirely capable of ruling both himself and others. Moreover, he had a high respect for all genuine philosophers; and though refraining from criticism of the rest, he preferred to dispense with their guidance. In society he was affable and gracious without being fulsome. The care he took of his body was reasonable; there was no solicitous anxiety to prolong its existence, or to embellish its appearance, yet he was far from unmindful of it, and indeed looked after himself so successfully that he was seldom in need of medical attention or physic or liniments. No hint of jealousy showed in his prompt recognition of outstanding abilities, whether in public speaking, law, ethics, or any other department, and he took pains to give each man the chance of earning a reputation in his own field. Though all his actions were guided by a constitutional precedent, he would never go out of his way to court public recognition of this.

Obama's Iraq Timeline

[Obama] OBAMA'S IRAQ TIMELINE
Where Does Obama Stand After Several Years Of Contradictory Statements And Failed Leadership On Iraq?
______________________________________________________________________

2008

Today, Obama Is Scheduled To Give A Speech On The Fifth Anniversary Of The Iraq War:

"[W]ednesday, March 19, 2008, Five Years After The Iraq War Began, Sen. Barack Obama Will Deliver A Major Speech On The War In Iraq And Our National Security In Fayetteville, N.C." (Ben Smith, "Moving On From Race," The Politico's "Ben Smith's Blog," www.politico.com, 3/18/08)

2007

Obama Introduced Iraq Withdrawal Legislation, Then Warned That Insurgents Would Wait Us Out:

"[O]nly After Mr. Obama Opened A Presidential Exploratory Committee Did He Introduce Legislation To Withdraw American Combat Brigades From Iraq By March 31, 2008." (Jeff Zeleny, "As Candidate, Obama Carves Antiwar Stance," The New York Times, 2/26/07; S. 433, Introduced 1/30/07)

At The Same Time That He Supported Withdrawal, Obama Warned That Iraqi Insurgents Would Just "Lie Low" Until American Troops Leave.Obama:"What the militias are essentially doing is they've just pulled back. They've said as long as there's these increased troop presence, we'll lie low, we'll wait it out. As soon as the Americans start leaving and redeploying into other areas, we will come back in..." (CNN's "Larry King Live," 3/19/07)

2006

Obama Warned Against A "Precipitous Withdrawal ... Driven By Congressional Edict":

Obama Warned Against A "Precipitous Withdrawal ... Driven By Congressional Edict." Obama: "[H]aving visited Iraq, I'm also acutely aware that a precipitous withdrawal of our troops, driven by Congressional edict rather than the realities on the ground, will not undo the mistakes ... It could compound them. It could compound them by plunging Iraq into an even deeper and, perhaps, irreparable crisis." (Sen. Barack Obama, Congressional Record, 6/21/06, p. S6233)

  • Obama: "A Hard And Fast, Arbitrary Deadline For Withdrawal Offers Our Commanders In The Field, And Our Diplomats In The Region, Insufficient Flexibility To Implement That Strategy." (Sen. Barack Obama, Congressional Record, 6/21/06, p. S6233)

2005

11 Months After Being Elected To The Senate, Obama Gave His First Major Foreign Policy Speech On Iraq, Which Repeated Ideas Already Voiced By Other Democrats:

"[Obama] Campaigned Strongly Against The War In His Bid For The Senate In 2004, But When He Arrived In Washington He Waited 11 Months To Deliver A Major Speech On Iraq." (Jeff Zeleny, "As Candidate, Obama Carves Antiwar Stance," The New York Times, 2/26/07)

Obama's First Major Address On Iraq Repeated Ideas Already Voiced By Other Democrats. "In his campaign, Obama forcefully opposed the war, yet it wasn't until late November that he delivered his first major Iraq policy address. And by the time he reached the lectern at the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations, other Democrats already had articulated many of the same ideas about not immediately withdrawing troops from Iraq." (Jeff Zeleny, "The First Time Around," Chicago Tribune, 12/25/05)

2004

Obama Said He Did Not Know How He Would Have Voted On The Iraq War And Claimed There Was "Not Much Of A Difference" Between His Position And The President's Position:

Obama Said He Didn't Know How He Would Have Voted On The Iraq War Resolution. "In a recent interview, [Obama] declined to criticize Senators Kerry and Edwards for voting to authorize the war, although he said he would not have done the same based on the information he had at the time. 'But, I'm not privy to Senate intelligence reports,' Mr. Obama said. 'What would I have done? I don't know. What I know is that from my vantage point the case was not made.'" (Monica Davey, "A Surprise Senate Contender Reaches His Biggest Stage Yet," The New York Times, 7/26/04)

Obama Said There Was Not Much Of A Difference Between His Position And The President's Position On Iraq. "'On Iraq, on paper, there's not as much difference, I think, between the Bush administration and a Kerry administration as there would have been a year ago,' Obama said. 'There's not much of a difference between my position and George Bush's position at this stage.'" (John Kass, "Obama's A Star Who Doesn't Stick To The Script," Chicago Tribune, 7/27/04)

2003

Obama Said He Would Have Opposed Funding For The War If He Were In The Senate:

Obama: "Just this week, when I was asked, would I have voted for the $87 billion, I said no. And I said no unequivocally, because, at a certain point, we have to say no to George Bush. If we keep on getting steamrolled, we are not going to stand a chance." (Sen. Barack Obama, Remarks To The New Trier Democratic Organization, 11/16/03)

2002

Obama Calculated The Political Risks Of Opposing The War, Then Gave A Speech In Line With A Key Constituency:

Obama Considered The Political Implications Before Deciding To Publically Oppose The War. "Moreover, even [Obama's former campaign manager Dan] Shomon concedes that Obama discussed the politics of his speech beforehand. 'what about the people that are for the war?' Obama asked him. 'Am I gonna have damage politically?'"(Michael Crowley, "Cinderella Story," The New Republic, 2/27/08)

Obama's Anti-War Views Were In Line With The Liberal Voting Block He Needed To Support His 2004 Senate Run. "With war looming in the fall of 2002, Obama was preparing a long-shot run for an open U.S. Senate seat ... Obama's best shot at the Democratic nomination involved consolidating a coalition of lakefront liberals and African Americans. ... [T]hough it may have been unpopular to oppose the war in Washington, that was not the case among liberals in Chicago-- among the first cities to pass an antiwar resolution." (Michael Crowley, "Cinderella Story," The New Republic, 2/27/08)

John McCain: America Must Be A Good Role Model

Op-Ed By John McCain, Financial Times

March 19, 2008

Americans and Europeans share a common goal - to build an enduring peace based on freedom. Our democracies today are strong and vibrant. Together we can tackle the diverse challenges we face, whether radical religious fanatics who use terror as their weapon of choice, the disturbing turn towards autocracy in Russia or the looming threats of climate change and the degradation of our planet.

But the key word is "together". We need to renew and revitalise our democratic solidarity. We need to strengthen our transatlantic alliance as the core of a new global compact - a League of Democracies - that can harness the great power of the more than 100 democratic nations around the world to advance our values and defend our shared interests.

At the heart of this new compact must be mutual respect and trust. We Americans recall the words of our founders in the Declaration of Independence, that we must pay "decent respect to the opinions of mankind". Our great power does not mean we can do whatever we want whenever we want, nor should we assume we have all the wisdom and knowledge necessary to succeed.

We need to listen to the views and respect the collective will of our democratic allies. When we believe that international action is necessary, whether military, economic or diplomatic, we will try to persuade our friends that we are right. But we, in return, must also be willing to be persuaded by them.

The nations of the Nato alliance and the European Union, meanwhile, must have the ability and the will to act in defence of freedom and economic prosperity. They must spend the money necessary to build effective military and civilian capabilities that can be deployed around the world, from the Balkans to Afghanistan, from Chad to East Timor.

We welcome European leadership to make the world a better and safer place. We look forward to France's full reintegration into Nato. And we strongly support the EU's efforts to build an effective European Security and Defence Policy. A strong EU, a strong Nato and a true strategic partnership between them is profoundly in our interest.

We all have to live up to our own high standards of morality and international responsibility. We will fight the terrorists and at the same time defend the rights that are the foundations of our societies. We cannot torture or treat inhumanely the suspected terrorists that we have captured. We must close the detention facility at Guantánamo and come to a common international understanding on the disposition of dangerous detainees under our control.

International responsibility also means preserving our common home. The risks of global warming have no borders. Americans and Europeans need to get serious about substantially reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the coming years or we will hand over a much-diminished world to our grandchildren. We need to reinvigorate the US-European partnership on climate change where we have so many common interests at stake. The US and Europe must lead together to encourage the participation of the rest of the world, including most importantly, the developing economic powerhouses of China and India.

I have introduced legislation that would require a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, but that is just a start. We need a successor to Kyoto, a cap-and-trade system that delivers the necessary environmental impact in an economically responsible manner. New technologies hold great promise. We need to unleash the power and innovation of the marketplace in order to meet our environmental challenges. Right now safe, climate-friendly nuclear energy is a critical way both to improve the quality of our air and to reduce our dependence on foreign energy sources.

That dependence, I am afraid, has become a vulnerability for both the US and Europe and a source of leverage for the oil and gas exporting autocracies. The US needs to wean itself off oil faster. Europe needs a comprehensive energy policy so that Russia's oil and gas monopolies cannot behave as agents of political influence.

The bottom line is that none of us can act as if our only concerns are within our own borders. We cannot define our national interests so narrowly that we fail to see how intimately our fate is bound up with that of the rest of humanity. There is such a thing as good international citizenship. If we wish to be models for others, we must be model citizens ourselves.

Certainly the US must be that model country. Leadership today means something different than it did in the years after the second world war, when Europe and the other democracies were recovering from the devastation of war and the US was the only democratic superpower. Today, there is the powerful collective voice of the EU, India, Japan, Australia, Brazil, South Korea, South Africa, Turkey and Israel, to name just a few of the leading democracies. And there are the struggling young democracies, such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Lebanon, that need and deserve help - more, in fact, than we have been giving. In Russia, democracy has been temporarily suppressed, but we all have an interest in seeing this great nation return to the democratic path soon.

This is not idealism. It is the truest form of realism. It is the democracies of the world that will provide the pillars upon which we can and must build an enduring peace.

John McCain Holding The Shield

Admiral John S. McCain Jr. served out his last active duty as Commander in Chief Pacific 1968-1972 amidst the high tensions of the Vietnam War. On July 29th 1977 Admiral John S. McCain Jr. went before a senate committee and said these words . . .” It is time for our country to stop cowering, cringing and to act the part of a great and powerful nation with a positive and constructive program. We have nothing to be ashamed of. Nor need we apologize for all the foreign aid and technical assistance we have given to other nations.” (Admiral John S. McCain, Jr.) Now at the time he was speaking to the senate in regards to possibly giving away the Panama Canal. He obviously, as did most military leaders at the time, disagreed with that possibility strongly. His words however, shed light on things for us. Present day included. His words hold much truth. His sense of duty beckons honor. Admiral McCain’s ability to instill strong moral principles, integrity and astounding ability to determine right from wrong in his son, call for even more praise. No doubt passed on from his father, also a four star Admiral in the Navy. ( Vice Admiral John S. McCain, USN (center)with his son, Commander John S. McCain, Jr., on board a U.S. Navy ship (probably USS Proteus, AS-19) in Tokyo Bay, circa 2 September 1945. Admiral McCain died a few days after this photo was taken. Note Japanese submarine in background, just to left of Admiral McCain.) The fact that he was able to do so has been clear to many of us for nearly three decades. If there were any doubt, his son’s appearance last night on Hannity and Colmes surely put it to rest. John S. McCain III spent a full hour on the program speaking with Sean Hannity. Throughout this hour one thing was very clear. John S. McCain III feels strongly that we have a duty to protect what we have inherited, and to spread the message to the rest of the world. McCain said “I feel confident that I can inspire people to believe they have a sense of duty greater than their own self interest.” I know I have heard him make that statement before. I am sure many of you have as well. I have been lucky enough to speak with McCain on occasion. I have also attended countless meetings, town-hall events, rally events etc. I can tell you first hand that it is near impossible to attend one of McCain’s events or speak with the man and not come away knowing full well you have a debt to pay to your country and are obligated to do so and just as eager. There are many issues at play in this election. I feel strongly the aforementioned is one of the most important. Too many simply take for granted their duty to their Nation. Too many feel they are owed something. Too many feel they ought not contribute unless they see how they can benefit personally. The Democrats play deeply on these feelings. They pick and poke and take advantage of them at nearly every turn. Alexis de Tocqueville wrote in "Democracy in America," “Government would cover the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd." The subtle despotism of democracy, he said, "does not destroy, but it prevents existence, it does not tyrannize but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which government is the shepherd." De Tocqueville must have had some Nostradamus qualities because I am fairly certain over 150 years ago he laid out both Barack Hussein Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton’s plan for America. I admit our Nation has suffered. Our shield is tarnished. My friends we are still America. The USA, we are still the greatest hope for ourselves and the world at large. I would like to share something with you. It is something once read will make sense and ring true to you no matter your age or affiliation. This appeared in the “London Daily Mail” in July of 1976. It was written by Ferdinand Mount. Mr. Mount said “What the world needs now are more Americans. The U.S. is the 1st Nation on earth deliberately dedicated to letting people choose what they want and giving them a chance to get it. For all it’s terrible faults, in one sense America still is the last, best hope of mankind, because it spells out so vividly the kind of happiness which most people actually want, regardless of what they are told they ought to want. We criticize, copy, patronize, idolize, insult but we never doubt that the U.S. has a unique position in the history of human hopes. For it is the only nation founded solely on a moral dream. A part of our own future is tied up in it and the greatest of all the gifts the Americans have given us is hope.” I think I would like to have met Mr. Ferdinand Mount. I gather he and I would have got along famously. John S McCain III embodies those ideals. McCain embodies those thoughts Ferdinand expressed, those sentiments and that great optimistic sense of hope. John McCain is America. I stated earlier on that I was concerned that there are generations of Americans that do not understand their duty or debt to their country. That being said, we are still without a doubt a proud people, with every reason to be so. There are people in power in our Nation, people vying for power that feel that pride in ones country is inappropriate, or out of fashion. These are the same people that want to have Tea with ruthless dictators. If we give in to these forces, if we let these liberals and their agenda manipulate our government, ruin our place in the world, destroy our allies faith in us, destroy the faith in those that may seek us out in need, destroy the fiber and moral of our honorable military men and women . . . then we surely are allowing a minority of misguided ideologues to write off those hopes and dreams of America. What would be the result of that, world wide my friends? The thought makes me shudder. John McCain understands there are areas of this world that require our presence, our attention, our assistance and our monitoring. They are absolutely essential to preserving any type of world peace. John McCain will send a message to those Democrats. John McCain will send a message to the world my friends. There will be no abandonment of our ideals. There will be no abandonment of our morals. There will be no abandonment of our pride, and there will be no abandonment of friends by America. John McCain will shine the tarnish from our shield, hold it up to the world and make sure every Nation on earth knows why it’s there.
