Senator Burr: Obama Will Probably Ignore Gen. Petraeus

This morning I talked to Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) about Senator Obama's shifting positions on Iraq. He made a lot of great points worth repeating here.

Initially, I asked him what he thought had brought about all of Obama's policy shifts on Iraq. He said, as with all campaigns, Obama built his campaign around certain assumptions and then formed his policy positions from those assumptions. It's very obvious that Obama centered his Iraq policy around the idea that the surge would fail. From there, he built his framework and positions. Now he is seeing the whole thing crumble around him as the surge worked.

What strikes me about the situation is that Obama bet against the troops and is now having to scramble and catch up to reality. Nonetheless, he is still forming his positions without really even talking to the military. I asked Senator Burr what he thought would come of Senator Obama's meeting with General Petraeus. "I think he will probably ignore what General Petraeus tells him," Senator Burr replied.

He then went on to contrast the candidates in their handling of Iraq. "Senator McCain's definition of leaving Iraq is victory," Senator Burr said. "[That means] Iraqis being able to handle their own security and to have a functional democracy that resembles, not ours, but theirs. Senator Obama has defined leaving as at any point he chooses irrespective of the Iraqis' ability to maintain law and order."

This, Senator Burr and I agree, is flawed because of Iran. "Senator Obama sees a disconnect between Iraq and Iran, yet those of us who are charged with the intelligence responsibilities in the Senate have continued to see Iran's role in killing Americans while we've watched Iran's nuclear proliferation continue at a pace that is a alarming to the rest of the world. To ignore that leaving Iraq prematurely increases Iran's hand is just blind to the reality," Senator Burr told me.

Then Senator Burr made a point I have not heard anyone else make, but I think is one of the most solid points on Obama's Iraq policy and war policy in general. He said, "Senator Obama potentially puts more U.S. soldiers in jeopardy than he takes out of harms way by blindly setting goals that, quite frankly, if he talked to the military, are not as easily achieved as he thinks."

Precisely.

Senator Burr also engaged me on the subject of energy. He said Congress really does need to move aggressively to increase domestic energy production. He also said Congress needs to begin working with the auto industry and others to help them transition and develop technologies quickly, including better electric cars. Right now, by doing nothing, Congress is hurting consumers and businesses.

All: Please note that Lee Hamilton, who introduced Sen. Obama at his speech in Washington today, disagrees with Sen. Obama on at least two central issues addressed in his speech today. Specifically, Sen. Obama today denied that Iraq has ever been a “central front in the war on terror,” despite the fact that Hamilton described Iraq as “a central front in the war on terror” in testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee while he was co-chairing the Iraq Study Group. Further, three months ago in April 2008, Hamilton said he opposes “target dates” for withdrawal in Iraq -- something Obama is clearly continuing to embrace today with his 16-month timetable:

We routinely post things on this site and our hundreds of affiliates concerning the numerous projects and things that can be done. We also have special volunteer needs listed on this site and several others....all of varying degrees.

Two important things you can do Right NOW...are assist with the Sign drive.

We need signs desperately in all of our battleground states. As many signs and bumperstickers as we can get our hands on. (yes our store will be up and running this week, sorry for the delay . . .but the old store just wasn't cutting it.)

On the topic of signs...sign 'parties' and 'contests' are a great way to go. Personal hand-made signs for one always attract more attention . . . folks like the personal touch. So here is a great way to help out. MAKE SIGNS. Draw them, paint them, snag some paper signs from an event and make them into yard signs. Buy them, print them . . . whatever it takes...get as many as you can. Get as many folks as you can to help you. Then distribute them. Shoot out emails to folks to see if they need or want one. Visit folks and simply offer them up. Coordinate your own sign wave and give some away right on the corner.

Also contact Andrea or Jean for more information on what they are doing regarding the "sign drive". We need to make this HUGE. Currently we are 'out-signed' and 'out-bumper-stickered' nearly 6-1 . . . that is CRAZY!

Believe it or not signage is an important issue. Let alone the subliminal impact...it is a great morale booster. Just ask the HucksArmy folks about signs. They were limited, they were limited on funds...they got together and made it happen. Sometimes re-using signs.........over and over until they wore right out.

Whomever comes up with the best hand-made sign . . . We will send them a $50.00 Gas card. Not only that . . . but however many signs they prove they delivered and or distributed Brad and I will Match that sign for sign and send them to another needy county somewhere in the country!! Send us a picture of your sign. Send us a pic of you making it if you want to be fun, we will make a great lil post about it. Send us a pic of you posting or distributing your signs.

Next up . . . Volunteers. This is key. We have many many great folks helping us out. Brad and I have also been working NON STOP on some fantastic partnerships around the country that should prove to be fantastic. We have also been contacted by several media groups and are getting the word out about all of you folks!

Soon we will post the new leadership up on the site with our State/national etc leaders and directors. Their contact information will be there feel free to contact them on how best to help in your state or region. They will have detailed information.

Another simple thing you can do is letters to the editor . . . a great feature to utilize is publishaletter.com Which we have used and posted about several times. If you need help with talking points etc etc or you simply want a cut and paste letter . . . just let someone in leadership know and we will provide it. We have several mailing lists that we routinely send talking points out to.

Our once famous 'Rapid Fire Team' , best known for shutting down 4 sites 2 offices and a senate office and helping to increase McCain's over all online presence by 524% our first month in operation is about to be called back into action.
